Car Parking Vastu: Where to Place the Parking in Your House Plan
Vastu prefers car parking in the north-west or south-east of the plot and keeps the north-east open. Here are the guidelines, and how we plan parking for individual houses and apartment buildings in Chennai.

On a city plot, parking takes a large share of the ground floor. Getting its position right affects the entrance, the living room and how easy the house is to use every day.
Vastu guidelines for car parking
- Best position: the north-west of the plot.
- Second choice: the south-east.
- Avoid: the north-east corner, which Vastu keeps open and light.
- Parked car: facing east or north is preferred.
- Leave some space around the vehicle; the car should not touch the compound wall.

Parking in an individual house
In an individual house the car porch is usually at the front, beside the entrance. In this design in Selaiyur the porch and gate are on the side of the house, which leaves the front elevation and the main door clear. Count the vehicles you own, and the ones you expect to buy, before the porch size is fixed.
Parking in an apartment building
For flats, stilt parking under the building is the usual answer. On this 41 ft × 80 ft plot in Madipakkam the ground floor has stilt parking for six cars along with a lift, so every flat gets covered parking and the road outside stays clear.

The practical side
- Check the turning space from the road, especially on a narrow street.
- Keep the gate wide enough for the car to enter in one move.
- Give the parking floor a slope so rainwater drains out.
- Plan two-wheeler space separately, so it does not block the car.
