Main Door Vastu: Which Direction Should Your House Entrance Face?

The main door is the first thing Vastu looks at in a house plan. These are the preferred directions for the entrance, what to do with a south or west-facing plot, and the practical points we check.

In Vastu Shastra the main door is more than the way in. It is seen as the point where energy enters the home, so its direction is decided before the rest of the plan.

Preferred directions for the main door

  • North, east and north-east are the directions most preferred for the entrance.
  • East is favoured because the door receives the morning sun.
  • West is accepted, with the door placed in the right part of the wall.
  • South is the direction most families try to avoid for the main door.

My plot faces south or west. What now?

The direction of the plot and the direction of the door are not the same thing. The road may be on the south, but the position of the door along that wall, and the way the entrance is approached, can still be planned according to Vastu. This is one of the most common requests we handle in Chennai, and it is best solved on paper at the design stage.

Other points Vastu looks at

  • The main door should be the largest door of the house.
  • It should open inwards.
  • The entrance should be well lit and free of clutter.
  • Avoid placing the door directly facing a toilet door or a dead wall.

The practical side

We also check how the entrance works every day: the steps and the level difference from the road, cover from rain, where footwear is kept, and whether the car and the two-wheelers can be parked without blocking the door.
